Roman Nava completed the
New Directions program in 1998. At that time, he enrolled in the
San Joaquin Delta College Culinary Arts program. He completed this
excellent 18 month program when New Directions was in need of a
Since the opening of our kitchen in 2001, Roman has been our
chef. He is responsible for serving over 125,000 meals per year
and he does it with care and passion. As a former resident of New
Directions, he is very aware how important good nutrition and good
tasting food is to our clients.
Not only is Roman our chef, he is also a great role model for
our clients. And, he says that working at New Directions keeps him
humble. "I see myself in every resident and am reminded every day
where I came from."
Roman certainly qualifies as a success story for New
Directions. Celebrating his 13th year of sobriety, he carries on
the tradition by encouraging and helping others earn their freedom
from drugs and alcohol.

Helen Betz is truly a Renaissance woman. An accomplished
painter, sculptor and photographer, Helen has spent her whole life
as an educator. She continues that path as the GED instructor at
A significant component of recovery is the ability to find and
keep employment. One of the major requirements to find a good job
is education. Helen patiently guides students through that
process. She is an integral member of the New Directions “family”.
And, like many others, she is truly dedicated to helping her
students achieve success and self confidence.
